Rates by SAP skill area
Specialist and leadership skills cost more than general module work. Eursap's 2026/27 UK guide puts contractor midpoints at:
| Skill area | Typical range | Midpoint |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture & programme leadership | £470–£845 | £660 |
| Human capital management (HCM, SuccessFactors) | £340–£830 | £585 |
| SAP Business AI | £390–£775 | £580 |
| Supply chain, manufacturing & assets | £340–£810 | £575 |
| Security, GRC & identity | £340–£810 | £575 |
| Finance, procurement & sales processes | £340–£775 | £555 |
| Technology, development & integration | £340–£740 | £540 |
| Data, analytics & planning | £340–£740 | £540 |
These are rates paid to contractors working outside IR35. Inside-IR35 roles need a higher rate to leave the contractor with the same income.
Contractor or consultancy?
Hiring an individual contractor is usually the cheapest day rate. You manage the work, the scope and the risk.
A consultancy usually charges more per day than an individual contractor. In return it owns the outcome: it plans the work, covers absence, brings more than one skill set and stands behind the result. For work that crosses several systems, such as an S/4HANA migration or an integration platform change, that ownership is often what keeps the total cost down.
What drives the price
- Scope clarity. An unclear brief is the biggest cost driver. Weeks spent discovering the real problem are paid for at full day rates.
- Skill rarity. Architects, integration specialists and newer areas such as Business AI command higher rates.
- Deadlines. SAP ends mainstream maintenance for ECC 6.0 (enhancement packs 6 to 8) on 31 December 2027, with optional extended maintenance to the end of 2030 at extra cost. Demand for S/4HANA migration skills will rise as that date approaches.
- Contract type. Fixed-price work costs more per day but caps your risk. Time-and-materials work is cheaper per day but open-ended.
- Location and travel. London rates run about 8% above the rest of the UK. Remote and hybrid work narrows the gap.
Common ways to buy SAP consultancy
- Fixed-scope assessment. A short, priced piece of work to find out what is really blocking you before committing to a programme. This is the lowest-risk starting point.
- Project delivery. A defined outcome, such as a migration, cutover or integration change, priced either fixed or time-and-materials.
- Managed service (AMS). A monthly fee to run and improve your SAP estate, which turns unpredictable support spend into a planned cost.
How to keep SAP costs down
- Write down the single problem you need solved before asking for quotes.
- Ask for a short assessment before any long programme.
- Compare quotes on total cost and on who owns delivery, not on day rate alone.
- Start S/4HANA planning well before 2027 to avoid paying peak rates.
- Clean up custom code and data early; both drive migration effort.
